WHY INVEST IN KENYA

In my opinion, Nairobi is the ‘gateway to Africa’ and the best place to do this from. Here is why:
1) East Africa’s Economic Hub 🌇
Founders from across the world are moving here to build their companies. Big tech is setting up shop in the city.
And it’s not just tech. A swathe of other companies are getting in on the fun too:
- Google opened Africa's first development centre in Nairobi in 2022
- J.P. Morgan opened it’s Kenyan office here in February
- Visa opened it’s first African Innovation hub in Nairobi last year
- Kauffman Fellows, the world's most prestigious Venture Capital community, chose Nairobi as their annual summit destination - bringing 300 of the top VCs to the city in September.
2) Accessible ✈️
Nairobi is one of the most connected cities in the world. Some travel times to make the point ⏱
- 10 minutes: My morning commute from door to door.
- 45 minutes: to get out of the city and to Ngong Hills (the picture below).
- 1 hour: Flying to the Kenyan Coast. I did it this weekend, and it was seamless
- 2 hours: To get to Addis Ababa (where my family live)
- 9 hour: flight time to just about anywhere in Europe.
By far one of the most accessible countries I’ve lived in.
3) The People 🫂
Most importantly: Kenyans are some of the most welcoming and friendly people I’ve met (and now) worked with.
And when it comes to tech here, everyone wants to connect and collaborate.

And people are always dropping through Nairobi, so you’re bound to bump into whoever you need to to take your company to the next level.
And generally in Kenya, infrastructure and tech is an African success story. As of 2020:
- 98% of Kenya’s population had a mobile phone (the global average is 67%)
- 59% of the population has internet access.
- Mobile money (called M-Pesa) was introduced in 2007 is used by 96% of Kenyan households. (I rarely use cash here)
- 4G Internet covers 77% of the Kenyan population, with 3G covering 94%. Not quite Australian speed, but there's coverage everywhere you go.
Nairobi has been ranked in the top 50 greatest cities of 2022 by TIME.
Honestly, it should be in the top 5.
It’s a fun city, connected to the rest of the world. And it’s the gateway into the rest of Africa. I’m going to be here a while.
NB: You can invest in Kenya as a foreigner.
